Plants, particularly native wild edible and medicinal species, have always been a part of Evelyn Vincents' life. From the age of 4 she already recognized their many values as healthful food, bandages, or weaving grasses into tiny plates to serve morsels of seeds, berries and barks she laid out on limbs and tree trunks as meals for the fairies and nature spirits. Her connection to nature ran deep. With each change in the weather, time of day and slightest change of the seasons was reason enough to run outdoors for yet another experience to witness the wonders of nature and to begin yet another adventure in discovery of the rural world around her.
"There always seemed to be a profusion of rainbows to catch my little Eagle eye and off I would charge through the tall rain soaked grasses and into the woods with the Gold Finches, Leprechaun's and fairies to nab the pot of gold that awaited us," she cheerfully admits. It never bothered her that she didn't find that pot of golden coins because in her chase she always discovered something new that she had never seen before, that alone spoke volumes in her independent and curious mind.
Evelyn had the good fortune of growing up in the Hudson River Valley of NY when it was still mostly swamp and farmland amongst rounded forested picturesque mountains. Being so near to Woodstock during the 60's and the dawning of health food stores, organic produce, breads baked in brick wood-fired ovens, herbalists and alternative thinkers was right up her alley.
When she was 18 she began her first business quite by accident. A distant relative had passed and the contents of her home were free for her to take. With a rented truck, the trek to NYC would be the first step she would take towards entrepreneurialism. She and her partner filled that truck as tight as could be and returned back to New Paltz and unloaded it into the garage of the two bedroom Cape Cod that she had purchased only a few months prior. There was way more than she could use so she thought it would be a good idea to have a garage sale. It was so successful that from there Evelyn went into the antiques business.
"After several years of having an antiques shop I moved on to importing giftware and jewelry from Southeast Asia, before it was the rage. It didn't take long for me to realize that I could capitalize on my natural artistic talents. On top of having the wholesale and retail import business I began sculpting original figurines for an international pewter company. I was commissioned to sculpt miniature pewter dragons, wizards, animals and chess sets from a tiny wad of Super Sculpy. This set the stage for the next addition to my business. I would design jewelry and hardware (drawer pulls) that would be cast in pewter like none that had ever been on the market before."
During the winters she would travel to Thailand for 3 months and bring drawings she would sketch, on the long flight there, for individual crafts people to reproduce. Many of those original designs are being made by larger factories and can still be found in small import shops in the US today.
As much fun and as successful as that was it wasn't her passion. She longed to design and work with mediums much closer to nature - to sculpt long sweeping curves in otherwise mundane lawn landscapes and deliberately incorporate native plant species back to where they rightfully belonged. Beckoning wildlife to return and homeowner's to go outdoors to rejuvenate their soul and spirit.
Evelyn was not your typical landscaper and was probably the only landscaper in the US who never owned or used a lawn mower. Lawn maintenance had no place in her approach or business. She says "My focus revolved around restoring native backyard habitats and creating landscapes that had a sense of place." She believes that, whether we consciously realize it or not, there is much to be said for the comforting sensation that a sense of belonging provokes within each of us no matter which part of the world we reside. This "belonging" also drew her to study classical Feng Shui, Sacred Space and Labyrinth design.
About 20 years ago Ms. Vincent discovered and began using essential oils. She was disgusted with the chemical choices of household cleaning products, air freshers, and first aid products that filled store shelves. Even though she wasn't able to locate truly pure essential oils back then I was determined to get chemical laden products out of her home forever.
Evelyn came across Young Living Essential Oils about 8 years ago. "I took one whiff of them and immediately knew these were the oils I had been searching and waiting for. Finally, I would be able to use essential oils in ways I had previously only dreamed." Since she had a successful landscape business she wasn't interested at all in pursuing Young Living as a business and simply enrolled as a distributor to get the best pricing and be a wholesale customer, which turned out to be a very smart choice.
Upon moving to WA she decided that she was getting a little to old for the physical demands of a landscaper. Wondering what successful business venture she could pursue next she began thinking about what businesses centered around being successful, independent and plants. What better choice than Young Living Essential Oils.
"For the past 8 years everything in my household has been Young Living oils and products, I use them daily from the moment I get out of bed. I love the convenience of the Essential Rewards Autoship Program, the savings, flat rate shipping costs and most of all the points I accumulate that are redeemed for FREE product! Look into it if your not already on the program!" Evelyn shares happily.
Since she has so much information to share with others she began an essential oil blog last September. Posting all kinds of interesting articles pertaining to wellness and essential oils. Visit TeaTreeFairies and GoldenAngels.
What Evelyn enjoys most about her Young Living business is watching her business and team grow. "The people in my organization are wonderful, ambitious, and have a desire to be successful. As a leader, I particularly like helping them discover their own Young Living path and hearing their success stories."
In general, she loves being able to show and sell a product to others that can truly make a difference in their lives. "One product line that I've found to be not only significantly useful in my own life but in others lives is the Thieves line. The toothpaste and mouthwash I swear by, I've even found that I haven't had any tartar or plaque build up in the past 5 years! Sure cuts down on dental cleaning expenses, plus it's more fun!"
The one Thieves product that is more useful than she ever dreamed possible is the Thieves Household Cleaner. She uses that on everything from an ovens, to a laundry and dishwasher detergent replacement, to being the ONLY cleaner she needs to have for everything. It, along with diffusing Thieves essential oil, prevents and kills Toxic Mold. "This one product alone I believe can change the quality of peoples lives."
The most profound aspect is the fact that for over 5,000 years man evolved with essential oils. "Knowing that each time I use an oil my body recognizes what it is and knows exactly how to process it is perhaps the greatest piece of ancestral wisdom that I can pass on to future generations."
Her only son recently became a Young Living distributor. That makes her feel the cycle of ancestral wisdom will continue on to him and her two wonderful grandchildren.
Abundance and Happy Oiling!
